A hip baby carrier is a carrying solution that allows you to position baby on your side, right against you. It replicates the natural carry we often do spontaneously with our arms, but with extra support and your hands free. And most importantly, without any pain!
It can be a sling (no knot), a wrap, a traditional baby carrier used in the side position, or a hip-seat, like our supplementary hip-seat.
Why choose a hip baby carrier?
Carrying baby on the hip isn't just a matter of back comfort (even if, let's admit it, that's already a pretty compelling reason).
- You relieve your back and arms: when properly adjusted, side carrying distributes baby's weight across your pelvis and hips instead of putting all the strain on your arms and shoulders.
- You keep baby close to you: the proximity and contact reassure your child, even for a carry lasting just a few minutes.
- Baby enjoys the view: on the side, they observe their surroundings like a big kid, which they love as soon as they can hold their head up well.
- You keep your freedom: one shoulder free, hands available to go about your activities.
In which situations is hip carrying particularly practical?
- Short trips and back-and-forth journeys (from the car to the house, a quick errand…).
- Moments when baby wants to be carried… but not necessarily for long.
- Alert phases when baby wants to see everything without being stuck facing you.
- Mealtimes and daily chores where having a free hand makes all the difference.
How to choose a hip baby carrier?
The best hip baby carrier is the one that matches your child's age, the frequency of your carries, and your everyday use. There is no one-size-fits-all model: it all depends on your needs. Here are the criteria to go through:
- Baby's age and weight: a newborn needs a snug, enveloping hold (wrap, sling), while a more active toddler can manage with a hip-seat or a physiological baby carrier.
- Duration and frequency: a quick carry lasting a few minutes or an extended one? Ergonomics becomes essential over time.
- Intended use: at home, on a walk, traveling, a quick carry… every context has its ideal solution.
- Parent comfort: good weight distribution across the shoulders, pelvis, and hips for pain-free carrying.
- Ease of setup: some parents want something quick and easy (sling, hip-seat), while others prefer versatility.
- Ergonomics for baby: M-position, supported back, pelvis well seated (more on that below).
