When one discovers physiological babywearing, whether in a baby carrier wrap or in a baby carrier, the benefits of carrying your child and all the technical aspects that go with it are readily explained. The words "physiological position", "hip dysplasia" or "volt" were quickly integrated into my vocabulary. But what we are not told is that our daily life with a carried baby will be different from that of non-babywearing parents. Here is a top 5 of everyday situations where carrying my baby made life much easier!
1 - Doing housework with baby
Yes, when becoming a mother, I didn't expect this. My house looked like a construction site, the laundry wasn't done, toys were scattered across the floor, turning it into a minefield. No way to put down the velcro baby, who only slept in 15-minute stretches, and who constantly demanded contact. The wrap allowed me not to be overwhelmed by household chores. Better yet, baby would easily fall asleep rocked by my movements. That is when back carrying became indispensable for both me and dad!
2 - Cooking
To avoid living on canned food or pasta, a solution had to be found. The baby carrier wrap, then the baby carrier established themselves as the miracle solutions. Baby was even fascinated watching me chop, dice and cook our little dishes. The nickname "ratatouille" ended up being given to him, because he would direct me in the kitchen... by pulling my hair just like in the cartoon, absolutely!
3 - Going to a restaurant with a carried baby
The dreaded ordeal of all parents! What if baby cries and accusing glances fall upon us?! Most of the time, it is also difficult to find a high chair. No way to put baby down, especially when you don't have a stroller! When my son was a baby, the solution that quickly presented itself at the restaurant was carrying in a sling. When he was awake, he was on my lap, then I would place him in the sling to be able to breastfeed him and he would fall asleep right against me during the meal. Yes, a few times he got a bit of food on his head, it's true!
4 - Outings in the city
I must admit I had a good laugh seeing parents with their stroller on the subway! Once baby was comfortably settled in the carrier, public transport turned out to be much simpler. You then get used to attracting attention with your carried baby cooing away. Another plus: when babywearing, people are less intrusive with your child.
5 - Breastfeeding everywhere
For breastfeeding mothers, the wrap is an undeniable asset. It is possible to breastfeed baby very quickly and in several positions. The wrap or the sling also allow you to conceal your breast when gazes become a little insistent. Breastfeeding while walking? Yes, it's possible!
Carrying your child very quickly becomes a second nature. But carrying baby also means forging very strong bonds with them by truly sharing their everyday life. Once certain prejudices are overcome, babywearing has saved me many times!
