Baby wraps

For the first months, nothing will ever equal the baby wrap and the skin to skin it allows. This promotes heat regulation, lactation, oxytocin ... You will have your hands free! For babies, the wrap allows you to make a transition with the mother's womb by prolonging the feeling of security. The physiological position leads to better digestion and therefore less reflux, colic.

Practical questions about babywearing

We’re adopting. Can we wear our child in the wrap?

Babywearing can be very useful to gradually create an attachment bond between the adopted child and his parents.

The carries you use will depend on how old he is and where he is from (was he worn in his native country?).

It must be done progressively, take your time explaining to your child what you want to do and ask him if he’s ok with it.

Carries that allow him a wide field of vision (Vertical / Seated Cradle, hip or back carries) rather than a close, snuggling position are interesting while you slowly get to know eachother.

I’m in a wheelchair and I’d like to know if and how the wrap can be used sitting down?

The wrap is tied at the waist or hips and can be spread to the buttocks or up to the belly. Tying the knot is done without using your legs, only the upper part of your body is active.

There are apparently no reasons not to use and tie the wrap sitting down.
You can use it just as described on the instruction booklet or on the online videos.

Remember that you will need a bit of room behind you and on your sides while you tie the wrap.

This wrap is interesting because its fabric molds to your body and can be spread without any uncomfortable bulks.

When the baby is about 4 months he can squat and his legs will come on each side of your upper body. Your chair needs to be wide enough.
When he reaches 6-8 months he’ll be bigger in a front carry and his feet will go all the way to the back of the chair.

The best time to use the wrap is during the first months, when baby’s not too big, doesn’t wriggle and can be worn several times during the day.

A ring sling may also be an interesting carrier for you as your child gets bigger. It is very fast to put on but allows only one-shoulder carries.

I’m a fluffy gal. Can I still wear my baby in a wrap?

A strong build is not a problem for babywearing even if it can affect the way you’ll do it.

Just pay attention to the recommendations about respecting the baby’s natural position and you can start wearing him.

It will be useful to observe the position of your baby as you hold him on your arms, since the wrap is only supporting this position.

The wrap is 5m long, which allows an adult up to 100kg to pre-tie the Advanced PWCC and experience every variation from there.

My breasts are very large. Will I still be able to use the Vertical / Seated Cradle Carry?

The wrapper’s body type obviously affects the position of the baby in the wrap.
While holding your baby in your arms, take your time observing where on your chest he snuggles and which position he naturally chooses. This may change according to his age.

A mother with large breasts may have to shift her baby to one side or the other, or hold him higher or lower than shown for standard carries, so that her breasts won’t disturb his pelvis – spine – head axis.

In a general manner, you have to prevent the baby from being in a “comma” (,).

Can I still wear my 18 months-old while I’m pregnant with another baby?

You must be careful when wearing a toddler while pregnant.

It’s particularly important to listen to your body and feelings.

If you feel tired or experience any pain, please consult your doctor or midwife before wearing your toddler.

Whatever the carry, be careful not to have any pressure points on or around your belly so your blood flow isn’t bothered.

There’s a small age gap between my two children. Can I wear them at the same time?

Wearing two children at the same time isn’t the best solution, either for the wrapper or the wrappees.
We don’t recommend tandem wearing, it’s best to have two wrappers for two wrappees.

I’m pregnant with twins. Is it possible to wear them at the same time in the wrap?

Tandem wearing is NOT recommended. It is hard to keep both babies in an optimal position and to fellow safety rules.

Baby’s face and airways shall be clear at all time.

Use this carry only for quiet moments, when you’re sitting down, for cuddling… This is in no way a carry to use when taking a walk.

It is best to have two wrappers when you have two babies. When that’s not possible, you can carry one baby in the wrap while caring for the other.

Can I use the wrap after a cesarean birth?

We recommend placing Baby really high when your wear him.

In the Vertical / Seated Cradle Carry, Baby’s head should be right under your chin. Tie the final knot in your back, without crossing or spreading fabric on your hips.

If the C-section is planned: take the wrap with you to the hospital so that Dad can use it to have skin-to-skin contact with Baby.
He just needs to unbutton his shirt.

Read users experiences on wrapping after a cesarean birth on our the Users’ Corner.

As soon as you get the green light from your doctor and you’re healing nicely and don’t feel too tired, if you need to wear Baby in the wrap, give it a try.

Can I wear my premature baby?

A few important facts about wearing premature babies:

Be extra carefull that the bay’s face is visible and clear at all time and that the carer constantly monitors the child.

When preparing to go homye with preemies after a few weeks in the hospital, the wrap is a great way to help the parents leave Special Care Baby Unit with more self-confidence.

It’s a reassuring transitional object, for the babies as well as the parents. Depending on the SCBU protocol, babies can usually be worn from the moment they reach 2kg and can breathe on their own.
Parents should use the same wrap in SCBU and at home, and not wash it in between.

Babywearing helps going from worrying about your baby to caring for him. Once again, this makes going home with your baby easier.

Baby is worn in a high Off-Center Front Carry, his head on wrapper’s shoulder.

In the wrap, baby’s head is held without being pinned to the wrapper’s chest. This way your hands are free to do whatever needs to be done in the house. However, it’s important to keep on holding baby’s head to maintain contact with the premature baby and not «forget» about it (one of the principles of kangaroo care).

Depending on the SCBU protocol, the medical staff can use a wrap while working to wear babies whose parents cannot be there.

Babywearing is obviously just as important to babies who aren’t premature but need to be hospitalized, and whose parents cannot always be present.

I heard about skin-to-skin contact in a wrap. Any tips on how to do that?

Skin-to-skin contact is recommended as early as the delivery room. It helps you during the first moments of breastfeeding and of building the attachment bond and helps baby maintain his body temperature. In the wrap, you can have discreet skin-to-skin contact even in public.

The heating is usually on high in hospitals and you and baby may sweat a lot, so don’t be afraid to keep baby in a bodysuit to limit perspiration.

Skin-to-skin contact can make you hot!

When can I start using the wrap for back carries?

We recommend waiting until your baby has good head control and can open his legs in a squat (at about 4 months).
Back carries give you a new mobility and take you to a new level of babywearing .

You can try several back carries, depending on your needs and on how confident you feel.

Back PWCC (Advanced Pre-tied PWCC on the back, with the help of another person to put baby on back) is a nice and easy transition to back carries.
Double Hammock (and its variations) is very confortable for both the wrapper and the wrappee, but it may need a bit of practice.

You may feel more confortable with back carries after coming to a workshop where an experienced instructor can give you useful tips.

I’ve never worn my 9 months-old. Is it too late to try?

Trying to wear your baby after his first months isn’t doomed to failure!
You (and your baby) may need a bit more time to get used to it, but if you’re patient and motivated nothing is impossible.

An older baby will not be worn the same way as a newborn. Your child may have lost the reflex with which infants push themselves up and grab the adult and you may have to explain to him what you expect him to do.
You won’t use the same carries as with a newborn. With a bigger and heavier baby, hip and back carries make more sense than front carries.

You can get help from an experienced instructor and form an opinion in a workshop dedicated to wearing older babies.
