Being pregnant, becoming a parent mentally… That's already quite anxiety-inducing. And when we think about what's needed before baby arrives: cold sweats, trembling, anxiety, irritability… (we may be exaggerating a little, but for the first one it really is stressful!) In short, we don't have peace of mind because we want the best for baby and don't want to forget anything.
So, to help you best prepare for the daily life that's approaching, we've drawn up a shopping list for baby before birth.
The baby registry: a great idea?
Almost everyone has already seen a well-stocked baby registry scroll across their newsfeed for a little one belonging to a family member, a friend, a colleague, an ex… Why not you?
All of these lovely people will want to offer a birth gift. That's where the baby registry plays its role: having what you need and what you've chosen. Not 157 different soft toys when Baby will have their favourite that they won't let go of. Not a piece of clothing that will never be worn. Just what's on your list and will actually be used :)
You can create one online or directly in specialist baby shops. Remember to include items at very different price points, so everyone can take part :)
We know some: MiniPouce, P'tit Colis, Mes Envies and Milirose
Not forgetting the new addition Bientôt9mois, which turns pregnancy into a real game! Your loved ones guess weight, height or date of birth… all while choosing the perfect gift.
What do you need to buy for a baby before they arrive?
So they have a full tummy
This will depend on whether you are breastfeeding or not, so adapt according to your situation.
- bottles of different sizes with size 1 and 2 teats in glass or BPA-free plastic. Even if you are breastfeeding, it's always good to have some on hand in case it's not possible at certain times :)
- stage 1 formula milk
- 1 bottle brush to clean the bottom of bottles (milk stinks soooooo much)
- 1 formula dispenser box
- 1 bottle drying rack
- bibs: you'll love wiping away baby's spit-up ????
- 1 breastfeeding kit: nursing pillow (or simply a bolster), breast pump, milk storage containers, nipple shields
To take them everywhere
At birth, the WHO strongly recommends the practice of skin-to-skin. Our baby wraps are suitable for practising it from the maternity ward, while allowing you to take baby everywhere, nestled close to you.
For your outings with baby:
- 1 suitable physiological baby carrier from birth or 1 baby wrap: the most practical option with all the benefits of babywearing
- 1 pushchair if you feel the need
- 1 changing bag (our CaravanBAG is a changing bag that also allows you to carry baby as a backup!)
- 1 car seat
- 1 blanket (rain cover or not)

To keep them clean and fresh (hygiene)
All babies are beautiful: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But not all babies are clean! So you need to buy a number of products:
- a baby bathtub or a bath reducer for your own bathtub
- a bath thermometer
- towels or hooded bath towels
- a changing table and a changing mat for changing baby
- nappies (and a nappy bin, though not essential?) newborn and 1 month size
- 1 baby thermometer to monitor their temperature
- Shower gel, shampoo, baby soap
- cotton wool
- gauze pads and antiseptic solution to take care of baby's umbilical cord
- saline solution
- 1 nasal aspirator (worst moment whether for them or for you…)
- 1 hairbrush
- 1 pair of baby scissors
- moisturising cream and nappy rash cream for baby's bottom
So they sleep like a baby
- 1 bedroom with a cot / cradle / moses basket / co-sleeping bed (even better)
- 1 mattress
- fitted sheets
- changing mat covers
- sleeping bags
- 1 baby monitor
- 1 mobile to soothe them
- 1 nightlight
- 1 chest of drawers + wardrobe
- a bouncer, we love the Charlie Crane one!

So they're comfortable in their clothes (essential clothing)
At the start of their life, baby will most of the time be in pyjamas or very cosy and comfortable outfits, it won't be a fashion show and they grow veeeeery fast!
- Bodysuits, bodysuits, bodysuits: useful all the time in summer and winter alike, the classic outfit (1 month size except for premature babies)
- Pyjamas (1 month size except for premature babies)
- 1 pair of booties
- pairs of socks
- 1 hat
- 1 pair of mittens
- 2 or 3 daytime outfits
- 2 or 3 cardigans
With all of this, you should be ready and can relax gently. The rest will come afterwards :)
