Want to enjoy babywearing in summer? The sling is probably THE solution for you to reassure baby while keeping your hands free for barbecues and other summer festivities. What's more, if you're having a summer baby, a sling for the birth at the maternity ward is just great.
Why choose a sling specially designed for summer?
When temperatures rise, carrying baby can quickly become a D-E-FI. With a summer sling, sweat drops are a thing of the past! Slings only need one layer of fabric to support baby. Which, of course, means less heat. Unlike conventional slings, which can require several layers of fabric. So you can keep baby close to you without worrying about both of you getting too hot.
In addition to their lightness, slings are designed to be quick to install: and if it's quick to install, it's bound to be less hot!
How to choose the right sling for summer?
A sling is always a good idea for carrying baby in summer, but here are a few criteria to consider:
- Fabric: Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics. For example, viscose is very light and offers a soft, enveloping feel, a very fluid fabric that leaves you free to move.
- Comfort: Although light and airy, the sling still needs to be supportive to distribute baby's weight evenly, otherwise it will be uncomfortable for you! Otherwise it will be uncomfortable for you!
- Size: Slings come in different lengths. Depending on your morphology, make sure the fabric is long enough for you to be comfortable :)
Precautions to take when carrying baby in summer
Summer is synonymous with heat, but with a little care, you can carry baby safely. Here are a few precautions to keep in mind:
- Stay hydrated: Carrying baby can be tiring, especially in hot weather. Remember to drink water regularly for yourself and to offer baby frequent breastfeeding or bottle-feeding moments.
- Check baby's temperature: The back of your neck is a good indicator. If it's too hot or clammy, uncover baby lightly :)
- Dress baby lightly: On hot days, there's no need to add layers of clothing. A simple cotton bodysuit is all you need. Discover our guide on how to dress with a baby sling in summer.
- Avoid direct sunlight: Even with a lightweight sling, it's important to protect baby from UV rays. Use a wide-brimmed hat or take a walk in the shade to avoid heatstroke!
And of course, avoid the hours when the sun is strongest: between 12pm and 4pm, avoid going out or prefer the shade :)
